The Nutmeg Socialist

We chose to name this project after Connecticut’s nickname of “the Nutmeg State.” But the nutmeg has a surprisingly radical history in socialist movements, as both a symbol of capitalist exploitation and possibilities of liberation. Stay tuned for a new logo and a detailed history of the nutmeg coming out soon!

This space is an extension of CT-DSA’s political education work. We are dedicated to developing our members’ interest in and capacity to do rigorous political analysis, cultivate a shared political consciousness, and advance our commitment to liberatory socialist politics in our communities and beyond.

This project grows out of DSA’s conviction that working people understand and take seriously the urgency of our historical moment and the intellectual work required to meet it.

We invite you to engage with these contributions, to bring them into conversation with your own organizing work, and to join the collective struggle for a world beyond borders, cages, and capitalism. Further, we invite you to consider contributing your own writing to future issues.

On The Value of Research | Connecticut DSA | On April 1st, 2024, I received notification that a project for which I was a research assistant had been completely defunded. I was fired, and the future of the project remained uncertain. Our funding came from the Center for Connecticut Education Research Collaboration (CCERC) which was established from federal COVID relief funds to address pressing issues in Connecticut’s public schools and provide jobs to Connecticut researchers. Usually, I’d console myself and try to find hope for the future, but it was hard to feel that there was a future for researchers like me, who think people deserve better. Despite this hopelessness, I joined the DSA Education Justice working group: a coalition of educators, librarians, students, parents, and more that seeks to improve public education from a socialist lens. There is power and strength in the unity this working group provides. I found consolation with others who reassured me that they still see the value in research.
